Ritual Machine
Materiality and Making
Spring 2005

For this project, we were asked to look to our environment in order to identify a ritual that requires a physical presence in the form of a piece of furniture. The “ritual” I identified was the need for a piece of furniture that could be used for drawing, working on a computer, storing small items, and much more. It is a “desk”, but it wasn’t to be thought about that way. We were to think about how this item could be made to better meet the needs we identified. I added my own twist to the project by limiting myself to using only a single size of lumber. The “desk” that resulted has lumber is two different orientations relating to the two main uses of the “desk”, work and storage.
